Program Tracks for Breakout Sessions
Sustainability in International Context
A vision for a more prosperous and sustainable world in 2020 demands that we push the boundaries of thought around what is possible. Given the growth, and corresponding increase in demand in emerging markets such as China and India, as well as smaller nations throughout Latin America and Africa, environmental sustainability is an especially salient global issue. Yet, many challenges lie ahead that may hinder this growth.
Sustainability in Industry
If our sustainability obstacles are to be overcome successfully, industry will have to play a leading role. But the position of industry is also one of the most precarious, having to innovate a sound method that meets all consumer, governmental, financial, and environmental demands. Industrial practices will be thoroughly analyzed, with special attention to design, manufacturing, and finally the end-of-life paradigm. Recent innovations to industrial sustainability will be highlighted, along with future goals and hurdles put forth by corporate representatives.
Sustainability Education
A new emphasis is being placed on sustainability in undergraduate engineering curricula across the country, as seen in the recent inclusion of topics such as cradle-to-cradle design and systems thinking. The structure of the college engineering curriculum will undoubtedly shape the future engineers who will be taking on our current sustainability issues. How will our ENGR101 courses be renovated to ensure that future engineers will have the best mindset for confronting the challenges that lie ahead?
Sustainability on Campus and in the Community
It goes without saying our challenges are daunting. Solving problems that span oceans, cost trillions, and are rooted in century-old practices is no simple endeavor. Yet solutions will be found, starting at the most local levels and smallest scales. Student chapter leaders and community organizers will speak of their successes and shortcomings, share hopes and ideas, and engage participants in a constructive discussion. We hope to not only identify opportunities for immediate action, but also foster an informed and empowered outlook.
