  • Biography

    Juan Lucena is Associate Professor in Liberal Arts and International Studies at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). He was Keynote Lecturer at the 2004 National Conference on Engineering Education in Colombia, 2005-06 Senior Fellow in Engineering Education at the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), 2006 Distinguished Lecturer at ASEE annual meeting, and advisor to NAE Center for Engineering Ethics and Society. Trained in mechanical and aeronautical engineering (B.S. Rensselaer 1987, 1988) and Science and Technology Studies (Ph.D. Virginia Tech 1996), he has led numerous projects that research the relationships among engineering, globalization, culture, humanitarianism and sustainable community development. Juan developed and directed the undergraduate degree program Science, Technology and Globalization at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (1996-2002) and directed the McBride Honors Program in Public Affairs for Engineers at CSM (2002-2004). He is author of Defending the Nation: U.S. Policymaking in Science and Engineering Education from Sputnik to the War against Terrorism (University Press of America 2005). With Gary Downey, Juan is co-developer of Engineering Cultures® multimedia courseware and co-founder/editor of Engineering Studies, journal of the International Network for Engineering Studies.
