Abstract

Five participants in a Purdue University short course describe their observations about how to meet social expectations in China--"how to be polite." As first-time travelers to China, their concern is to figure out how to make friends and complete transactions effectively. Another team of five students explore "misconceptions" about China. Which turn out to be without foundation? The third team in this student group focused on food. What can be learned from food consumption and the associated social expectations? The last two groups considered education, first as "institutionalized" structure and second, as "student life."
