Virtual Prototyping through Collaboration in Finland

Category Publications
Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the additional benefits gained by the collaborative research team through the international collaborations sponsored by the IREE program within NSF. The paper begins with a brief explanation of the research which is focused on evaluating the value of display media and virtual prototypes for improving team communication and task performance for architectural and engineering design. The research was broadened through a collaborative project with VTT, the Center of Technical Research in Finland. This research project was beneficial for determining the correlation between the use of new building information modeling software and its impact on media choices for virtual facility prototyping. The research activities carried out in Finland included daily collaborations with VTT personnel, a series of field interviews, a focus group discussion, and a set of observational experiments. The broader impacts of this collaboration are discussed, along with suggestions for ensuring successful experiences for other research teams getting involved in international collaborations facilitated by the IREE program.
