Abstract
The Rainwater Harvesting Storage Capacity Optimizer Tool (GlobalHUB Tool Name: RAINWATERSIM) is an online tool originally developed to size storage tanks for a rainwater harvesting system at Tenwek Hospital in the Bomet district of Kenya.
The user inputs mean monthly rainfall data, roof properties, demand side approach simulation properties, supply side approach simulation properties, and tank cost information. The program first converts monthly rainfall data to pseudo-daily rainfall data used in the simulation. From there, the simulation outputs tank size vs. percentage of demand met (demand side approach), output supply vs. storage capacity (supply side approach), and output supply versus storage cost (supply side approach).
The tool was originally developed in MATLAB, but the code is powered by open-source software, Octave. This tool is developed using nanoHUB.org’s Rappture project.
