Changchun
Geography
- Located in the Northeast, Changchun is the capital of the Jilin Province. Known for its mild and even chilly weather, the name Changchun is literally translated as “Long Spring” in Chinese.
The people of Changchun are extremely friendly. It is not uncommon for taxi drivers to converse with passengers.
Places of Interest
- Puppet Palace – The palace of the Qing dynasty, the last dynasty in China. Contains many elements of Japanese influence since Japan implemented a puppet government.
- Cultural Square – Second biggest square in the world behind Tiananmen Square. Come at night for shows and recreation
- Nan Hu – “South Lake”. Contains an assortment of activities such as go karts, badminton, or even just for a night time stroll.
- Mayflower Club (wu yue hua) – One of the more popular clubs in Changchun, Mayflower attracts many different people, including tourists.
Food
- Some of the local foods include “mi sian”, which are thick noodles with an assortment of meat and vegetables in soup. Silkworm pupae and donkey meat are also specialties of the area. For those feeling more daring, dog meat and snake meat are also served. Lastly, for cheap meals, Congee and fried pancakes are a popular component of meals
- Higher end restaurants include Changbaishan, which are a series of restaurants located within the hotel of the same name. One restaurant in particular is a Japanese buffet with Japanese Interior Decor.
Huhhot
- Capital city of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China, Huhhot is located in the north western part of China, 45 minutes away from Beijing by airplane. It is quickly becoming a popular travel destination in China during summer for its mild weather and for being the gateway to nearby grasslands. Hohhot itself is just like many other medium sized Chinese cities, it’s modernized, features large shopping galleries, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Pizzahut, etc…The commodity price is above average among Chinese cities of similar sizes. It has gone through several expansions during the past few years. The city has a dedicated Muslim section. As a surprise to many visitors, the majority of people in Huhhot is of the Han ethnic group, and most of them speak standard Mandarin. Most buildings with titles have Mongolian translation underneath, however, Mongolian is not used commonly in Huhhot.
- Food in Huhhot tend to be a bit salty. Some of the locals’ favorite dishes include “手扒羊” (Cooked Lamb), and “莜面” (a type of flour made with oat).
- The most sought after tourist attraction is the nearby grassland. Where visitors can dine at the local yurt for traditional Mongolian food, go horse back riding, and enjoy the beautiful view of the grassland. These grasslands include: ‘ZhaoHe Grassland’, ‘HuangHuaGou’, and ‘GeGenTaLa Grassland’
- Taxi is the most convenient mean of transportation, the fare starts at 6RMB, and it usually cost less than 15RMB to drive across the city.
