Hengshan road is a particularly great place if you are homesick. It has many different restaurants and nightlife. About a five minute walk off the subway stop, there is the British Bulldog Pub which has buy one get one free burgers that are great meals to have when you are craving something other than Chinese food.
Yan’s fried dumplings is a must when going to Shanghai!!!!!!!
Lillian’s Cake has heavenly egg tarts and mini cheesecakes for 3 kuai. A great treat when youve been hiking around the French concession half the day. They have 3 locations, 2 on Nanjing Road (East and West Nanjing Road stops on line 2) and one in the French Concession near line 1.
The Shanghai Museum is a great FREE place to go and see historic artifacts from the different cultures and dynasties of China.
Shanghai Lonely Planet is a great book to look at for travel tips around Shanghai.
Buying a refillable subway card will save you much travel time.
“Tianzifang” is a neat area in Xitiandi. It’s characterized by old Shanghai-style houses that have been converted into shops/cafes/art galleries. Residents still live among the stores, however, so you still get a feel for traditional China.
Qibao is the best place for xiaolongbao and other street food, to be honest. Make sure to get jackfruit chips, bamboo rice, black sesame dumplings and just whatever tickles your fancy. Qibao is on line 9 and is only a few stops away from Xiujiahui. There is a lot of souvenir stores that do not bargain at all, which may or may not be so great.
Di Shui Dong – Spicy Hunan goodness! Try the cumin crusted ribs (their specialty). You can also get a good beer (Vedett, Maredsous, …) for pretty cheap. There are a few locations; the best is on Maoming Lu.
